Would it be possible to drop the dependency on mplayer from mencoder? I see there's aconvert which could be patched to check if mplayer is available (or moved back to mplayer and made to check if mencoder is available) and give a suggestion to install the missing package if not, but are there any other, "harder" reasons for the dependency?

If the dependency was not there, I would be able to cleanly remove the following packages from my PVR setup which is somewhat space critical, OS installed on a CompactFlash card:

mplayer aalib-libs libXScrnSaver libXinerama libXvMC libXxf86dga libcaca lirc-libs pulseaudio-libs + cascading dependencies of these: dbus dbus-libs freeglut gpm-libs libXtst libXv libasyncns libsndfile mesa-libGLU slang jack-audio-connection-kit libXi mesa-libGL libXdamage libXxf86vm libfreebob mesa-dri-drivers libXfixes libavc1394 libiec61883

I'll try to fix this in the next release.

Done in current (mplayer-1.0-0.112.20100424svn.fc12) build.
