+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #995 +++

using the current versions of h264enc and mplayer on Fedora 16 does not work. mencoder segfaults quite often using the comman line options created by h264enc and even if it does not crash the resulting video file will be unusable (no smooth video, lots of artifacts)

used software versions:
mencoder.x86_64 1.0-0.126.20110816svn.fc16 @rpmfusion-free
h264enc.noarch 1:9.2.4-1.fc14 @rpmfusion-free

I didn't take the time to look for a h264enc version which works with the current mencoder rpm, but instead build a recent (20111207) mencoder from svn and used the latest h264enc (9.4.1). They work together nicely (except for some A-V sync issues, which could be fixed by adding "-mc 0 -noskip" to every mencoder call)

If I remember correctly I had to build my own mencoder as the most recent h264enc (9.4.1) didn't work with the 1.0-0.126.20110816svn.fc16 rpm either and exhibited the same issues (crashes and unusable results), which seems odd, as the release date of h264enc 9.2.4 is 2010-07-21, but may be too new and too old versions result in the same kind of problems...

Could you retry with mplayer from testing? This is the latest snapshot which builds with the multimedia stack we in F-16 and updating to anything later than that will require a lot of work.

There was a h264enc update recently, please verify that the problem doesn't reproduce and reopen if it does.
Thx for the report.
