Description tskoone 2012-12-09 07:48:37 CET
Hi,
I was not able to get bcm43228 to work on my Acer V3-571.

lspci show the card:
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43228 802.11a/b/g/n

lsmod shows that wl is loaded:
 ~]# lsmod |grep wl
wl 2600697 0
cfg80211 197072 3 wl,mac80211,rt2x00lib
lib80211 13969 2 wl,lib80211_crypt_tkip

And NetworkManager applet says that BCM43228 is disconnected.

/var/log/messages says:
Dec 9 08:15:31 AspireV3 NetworkManager[858]: <info> (em1): carrier is OFF
Dec 9 08:15:31 AspireV3 NetworkManager[858]: <info> (em1): new Ethernet device (driver: 'tg3' ifindex: 2)

Hello,

Thanks for reporting this issue.

In order to try to understand what is going wrong, could you please provide (by
adding an attachment) the result of the command lines below typed in a root
console (using sudo may be requested) just after you log in:

dmesg
cat /var/log/messages
lsmod
rpm -qa | grep -e broadcom -e kmod-wl -e kernel
lspci -vn | grep 14e4
rfkill list
dmidecode -t 1

For the last one (dmidecode) remove all personal information (serial number,
UUID, etc), just keep the necessary things that can identify your laptop
manufacturer, model, family, etc.

If the second command (lsmod) doesn't show any wl module loaded, could you
please also provide the output of this command line typed in a root console:

modprobe -v wl

and then after this command, provide again the output of dmesg in a root
console.

Could you also please verify that your configuration file in /etc/modprobe.d
folder and specially /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-wl-blacklist.conf file use good
"blacklist" instruction according to your hardware configuration?

Thanks in advance for providing all this.

But before all this, could you please try one of the solutions proposed in the /usr/share/doc/broadcom-wl-5.100.82.112/fedora.readme file (change preferred API to WEXT). For this to work, be sure that only broadcom-wl and akmod-wl are installed in their last version (rpm -qa | grep -e broadcom -e kmod-wl should help to achieve that). Once the installation performed, a new kmod-wl package should be present, and you should keep it installed.

Cordially,

Comment 9 tskoone 2012-12-15 13:53:03 CET
I added the /var/log/messages file as attachment. Cleaned it not to contain any private data.

Changing the API and rebuilding the kmod-wl did not work. I removed the old kmods before rebuild and reboot.

Thank you for providing all this.

After a quick look at all this material, nothing seems to be broken with your wireless device. In the /var/log/messages file I can see that your eth0 interface is in order one time your BCM4359 wireless device (aka BCM43228), and another time your BCM57785 Ethernet wired device. Maybe the Ethernet driver tg3 is causing your wireless device to be wiped out.

Maybe you should force the wireless device name at boot time by adding in your /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file the following lines (one beginning with a sharp and one beginning with SUBSYSTEM - be careful of broken lines in this bugzilla):

# PCI device 0x14e4:0x4359 (wl)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="wlanN"

Take care to modify XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX with your wireless device MAC address and wlanN with the wireless device name you wish (eg wlan0 or wlan1 etc. ). Probably others settings should be modified according to the choice you will make (NetworkManager, proxy settings, etc. ).
As I can see a wlan0 in the files you provided (seems to be an usb wireless device), you should remove it in order to see if changes are Ok or not.

After this you should see all your network devices when typing in a root console:

ifconfig -a

If your wireless device isn't listed by the above command, you should then try to switch to the WEXT API and try again to see if it appears in the list.

Feel free to provide any information you think necessary about this issue.

Cordially,

RPMFusion is no longer releasing updates for this version of Fedora. This bug
will be set to RESOLVED:EXPIRED next week to reflect this.

If the problem persists after upgrading to the latest version of Fedora, please
update the version field of this bug (and re-open it if it has been closed).
