Julian since you have maintained mplayer and see what happens upstream.
could you do something about this bug ?

I can't reproduce it with the F18 mplayer.

I have just submitted mplayer-1.0-0.144.20120205svn.fc17 to the build system. It should fix your problem, if not, please re-open.
