Description Alex Murray 2013-03-18 12:45:33 CET
Seems there is a newer (unreleased) version of broadcom-wl which Ubuntu are using - 6.20.155.1 - would be great to get this packaged for Fedora as well.

Hello,

Thanks for reporting this.

I had already filled a review request for these drivers (see https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2550 and https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2549), but as I'm a little bit confused about the status of this driver, I didn't go further.

As you can see in these review request and in my comments on the discussion you pointed (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/923809) the original driver was shipped with Dell laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed on it. These drivers were only for one device (bcm43142 aka bcm4365 aka Dell 1704) and for x86_64 architecture.
The last Ubuntu driver is for i386 and x86_64 and is bumped from 6.20.55.19 to 6.20.155.1 version, but I can't find where it comes from (eg. what is the upstream source?).
In addition to that, as this driver replaced in Ubuntu the previous Broadcom (last) official one (5.100.82.112 - http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php), I had to deal with it on a HP Mini 210 with a bcm4313. At the time of the first release (probably 6.20.55.19) this driver wasn't working with this device. I had to revert to 5.100.82.112 in order to get my wireless device working as usual, and today it is still this way.
All these are the reasons that led me to post a review request only for the original driver, but not for the last Ubuntu one and only for the bcm43142 device.
As I personally never tested the last one (6.20.155.1) with my bcm4313 device (HP or Lenovo, yes my Fedora laptop is Lenovo), I can't say if it is working well or not, and I can't certify that all Broadcom devices known to work with the 5.100.82.112 will work with the 6.20.155.1 one. At this time I can't say, if it is worth upgrading the official rpmfusion wl-kmod to 6.20.155.1, or if it is worth keeping this old but official Broadcom driver (as legacy probably) and propose a new set of packages with the Ubuntu upstream one.

But, in any case, as I already posted the review request for the new one, I'm Ok to maintain these two packages, if my incertitude are dropped out by any user's feedback and according to the choice that will be made about this driver.

Thanks again for pointing this.

Any comments or feedback are welcome, this will be helpful in the decision the community can take about this driver.

Cordially,

Hi,

Maybe this thread is worth following in order to make our mind on how to deal with this driver:

Hello,

Maybe you should be interested by https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2721#c47.

But, as this is already stated in this thread, use it at your own risk.

Feedback welcome.

Hello,

As last official Broadcom Wireless Device Driver has been published since 10/09/2013, I close this bug.
