trying to play ogg vorbis files, mplayer pretends to start as usual, but it doesn't play anything and it acts like it reached end of the playback immediately

trying the same file with ffplay from ffmpeg, it plays without any problem

mplayer-1.5.1-0.4.20230228svn.fc38.x86_64

Have you reported the issue upstream?

no, because it does not happen on my other system that has Gentoo installed, so I guess this is Fedora (RPMFusion) specific problem

Does gentoo use ffmpeg-6.0?, if not your comment is irrelevant.

mplayer doesn't work with ffmpeg-6.0 so you will need to file the issue upstream.

w541 ~ # equery l ffmpeg

obviously not ...

however, I don't see how that makes my comment irrelevant - I thought that it is packager's responsibility to ensure that the packages work together within the distro, so if Gentoo can do it, Fedora (RPMFusion) can do it too for sure; mentioning where does it work (so we can find the difference causing the problem) might be a first step to solution then

and it seems that it is not too wild assumption if you were able to solve (hopefully, not tested yet?) the issue by changing build dependencies

mplayer isn't currently maintained and will be dropped from the repo once I retire compat-ffmpeg4 (eta: F40) if it isn't fixed upstream.
Personally I don't think mplayer is much use in 2023 with it's gtk2 GUI and poor support of newer libs.

ok, mplayer-1.5.1-0.6.20230530svn.fc38.x86_64 works, thanks again

in RH bugzilla, I'd switch the state to VERIFIED, but I'm missing it here, so I guess it is no-op now and then it will be up to the assignee to mark this RESOLVED once the update hits the stable repo ...?

still plenty of time until F40 :-)

I don't care about GUI as I'm using commandline - what is the replacement here?

ffplay has its shortcomings

mpv didn't work for me in the past - time to try it again?
